Please note that the I’m posting this late, so the meeting featuring Anna Genoese as a speaker has already past. However, the President’s Message does talk about upcoming events…Enjoy!
OCC Is The Place To Be!
I don’t know about you all, but I’m still walking around in awe over our August speakers–the fabulous published author panel in the morning sharing their expertise and the latest information on the genre market, and the infamous David Morrell schooling us on viral marketing and our book’s platform. My mind is spinning and all I can say is wow!
Every day the publishing industry is changing. That’s one of the things we heard over and over again at the National conference in Atlanta. But change can be good because it brings about possibilities, writing possibilities, technology possibilities, possibilities none of us have even yet thought of. Here at OCC we’re trying to stay on a par with, or one step ahead of, those changes.
This month, we’re welcoming editor extraordinaire, Anna Genoese from TOR/Forge who will read and critique query letters submitted by our members during the morning workshop, and bring us up to date on both the industry and her publishing house, and tell us what she’s buying in the afternoon. Don’t forget to send in your query letters via email to Marianne Donley at MHDonley@aol.com.
Then at the end of the month, Saturday, September 30th, is our one day Autumn Affaire featuring the legendary writing coach, Chris Vogler. Not only is Chris going to teach his timeless, best-selling concept outlined in The Writer’s Journey, but he is going to cover his latest passion, polarities, and his endless fascination with the question, “how did stories come to be?â€
Wow, again! Viral marketing and platforms last month, hero’s journey and polarities this month. This is cutting-edge stuff, people. There are still a few openings for Vogler’s intensive workshop, so be sure to look for the sign up information in this newsletter, or on our award winning website at www.occrwa.com.
Next, I want to say a very special ‘thank you!’ to Lori Pyne, who did a stunning job coordinating our inaugural, highly successful Book Buyer’s Best contest for published authors. Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners. When you have a chance, go onto our website and check out our overall winner, Gail Barrett’s page. The top prize in our BBB contest, in addition to the beautiful trophy, is a year of publicity on our website! At the risk of repeating myself, wow again!
More thanks go to Jennifer Crooks who is expertly wrapping up our Orange Rose contest for unpublished authors. The finalist’s manuscripts are in the hands of the editor judges and we will be announcing the winners next month at our October birthday bash.
Speaking of next month’s meeting, our 25th anniversary!, we’re thrilled to announce that our special guests will be Rita Clay Estrada, the original founder of our Orange County Chapter, along with our impressive slate of OCC past presidents. And that’s not all. Our featured speaker will be New York Times best-selling author and two time Edgar Award winner, T. Jefferson Parker!
Yes, OCC is definitely the place to be. Be sure and stay with us for the ride as we continue to bring you great programs, PR opportunities, and the best chapter experience ever.
