What’s With the New Year?

January 6, 2023 by in category Pets, Romance & Lots of Suspense by Linda O. Johnston tagged as , , , , ,

Happy 2023, everyone! Should it be happy for a writer? Well, that depends on what you’re writing and what you want to accomplish in the new year.

Me? Well, I’ll have three new books published this year: Undercover Cowboy Defender, part of my Shelter of Secrets series for Harlequin Romantic Suspense, Cry Wolf, my second Alaska Untamed mystery for Crooked Lane under my pseudonym Lark O. Jensen, and CSI Colton and the Pregnant Witness, part of the large Harlequin Colton series—this year, Colton NYC.

I’m currently working on edits for CSI Colton and the Pregnant Witness and Cry Wolf. Next will come a couple more books in Shelter of Secrets. And more? Well, my mind is always churning on ideas that I haven’t yet fleshed out. And I probably will with at least some of them.

And you? If you’re a writer, do you have this year planned? Are you working on something you’ve already sold or determined to publish independently? Even if you have a day job, I suspect your mind is also moving along similar paths to mine, figuring out what you’ll write when—and how much you can accomplish in 2023.

Do you plan over the long term? Weekly? Monthly? Or do you just see how things go?

And do you allow distractions to slow you down, at least a bit—like me? My 11-month-old puppy Roxie still has lots of energy and she knows how to get my attention to throw toys to fetch even while I’m writing. Or, she’ll attack our older dog Cari and they’ll run around the house growling in fun at each other, another distraction. What’s your most fun distraction?

And where do you want to be at the end of 2023 when you tell the world all you’ve accomplished this year? Me? I want to continue writing and playing with the dogs and coming up with even more ideas and following through with them. Oh, yes. I intend to enjoy 2023.

Happy New Year!

January 6, 2020 by in category Pets, Romance & Lots of Suspense by Linda O. Johnston tagged as , ,

I know it’s the sixth of the month and you’re probably tired of hearing Happy New Year, but it is my first post here on A Slice of Orange for 2020. I could also say Happy New Decade, although I know that the new decade probably starts in 2021 instead, but I like the idea of 2020 being the new beginning.

So what’s up this year? For me, I’ll have at least one more Harlequin Romantic Suspense book, Colton First Responder, published in February. I’m working on two more HRS books but I don’t know when their publication dates will be. And so far, I don’t have any more cozy mysteries in the hopper, after the demise of my most recent publisher, Midnight Ink, but I do have some ideas I’m working on.

Last year, I attended four or five writing conferences. This year? I’m not sure how many I’ll attend–but the possibility exists of none. Sigh. I enjoy them but two of those I went to last year that are local are held every other year. Others? Well, I might jump in but there are reasons I may not–such as I may not attend Malice Domestic since I’m not currently writing a cozy mystery, nor do I have any recent ones to promote. Maybe the Romance Writers of America, though.

So how about you? What are you up to this year? More writing? More reading? More traveling or attending conferences? More enjoyable things?
Have fun no matter what you do!

Happy New Year!

For a Good Paws | Linda O Johnston | A Slice of Orange

If the rest of this year is anything like the beginning, I’m in trouble!  Oh, it’s been fun, but with family things still going on and my working on writing something I still probably shouldn’t talk about much, it’s been so busy that I haven’t kept track of what day or date it is as well as I ought to.

As a result, this post–which is late thanks to my current mind set–will be short and hopefully sweet.  I’m already pondering the couple of published novels I should have available this year, and the first will be my last Barkery & Biscuits novel, the fifth in the series, called For a Good Paws, which will be published in May.  As with my Harlequin Nocturnes, the publisher, Midnight Ink, is ending.

But there’s always more to come.  I’m already working on a couple of things including the one mentioned above, and one will also be out in 2019.

So–Happy New Year to all of you–and lots more Slices of Orange to you in 2019!

2014: Why haven’t you finished that book yet? by Jina Bacarr

The clock is ticking…

Tick tock…tick tock…

How many words did you write today? Why haven’t you finish that book yet?

We all torment ourselves with these phrases and then blame our lack of productivity on…

Twitter…Facebook…Instagram…kids…family…the Internet…not enough coffee.

It’s all about focus.

And finding that beautiful space in our minds where we can run free and create and write and write and write.

It can be as elusive as a butterfly.

But well worth going after, no matter what gets in our way.

According to experts, interruptions can put a big damper on our concentration and it can take about ten minutes to get the writing flowing again.

So the next time an email pops into your Inbox, or the phone rings, or someone yells, “Hey, Mom, are you busy?” know that it’s not your fault if it takes a few minutes to get back into the moment.

Then let the butterfly in your mind run free…

Best,
Jina

In case you missed it, here is an 11-minute video with an excerpt from Chapter One in my novella, “A Soldier’s Italian Christmas” available on Amazon Kindle.

You can be sure I had a lot of interruptions putting this together, but I finished it!
