Sci-Fi, Inspiration & Foodie Romance: Calls for Submission

January 31, 2012 by in category Archives tagged as , ,

Mmmm. How yummy can delicious foodie romance be? If you’re like me, and the Food Network is a favorite channel, then maybe you’ll want to slip out of the kitchen and in front of the computer. I’ve put together quite the eclectic mix this month, with calls for submissions from the writing worlds of science fiction to Harlequin’s Love Inspired line to Smut by the Sea. Enjoy the inspiration, and please let me know any success stories!
EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing: Professor Challenger Anthology
A broad range of new and original stories built around Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s LOST WORLD character Professor George Edward Challenger. Stories derived from the aftermath of events in the Lost World are welcome; however, simply revisiting or rehashing the Lost World without good cause is not. Challenger is a man of science first and foremost, not an explorer.
Deadline: May 31, 2012; short story: 1,000 to 7,500 words; novelette: 7,500-10,000 words.
Food Flair
Do you adore the Food Network? Do Bobby Flay and Rocco DiSpirito titillate your senses when they caress a flank steak, whip cream to a sensual cloud, or lay a beautiful table? Does a man’s skill in the kitchen impress and delight you as much as the way he kisses?

Then we want you to write a Foodie romance for Decadent Publishing!

Foodie romance focuses on romance, but food would win the prize for best supporting character. Maybe the heroine is a chef or a food critic, or maybe the hero just appreciates a meal masterfully prepared for maximum enjoyment. Like any art form, the Culinary Arts can be enjoyed as a sensual experience, exciting to the eyes and pleasing to the palate. Whether your taste is gourmet Kobe burgers in Seattle, European pastries in Salzburg, or delicate sushi in Sunagawa, foodie romance is about the culture of cuisine and the people who enjoy it.

Our general submission guidelines apply to this category. When submitting, please note that it is a Foodie romance. For more information, visit http://www.decadentpublishing.com and click on Submissions.

Love Inspired
The Love Inspired line is Harlequin’s series of contemporary, inspirational romances that feature Christian characters facing the many challenges of life and love in today’s world. Books run 55,000-60,000 words.
Each story should have an emotional, satisfying and mature romance; however, the characters should not make love unless they are married. These are “sweet” romances. Any physical interactions (i.e., kissing, hugging) should emphasize emotional tenderness rather than sexual desire or sensuality. Please avoid any mention of nudity.
All stories should focus on one hero and heroine who meet as early in the book as possible. The hero and heroine should be on the page together in the first chapter—the first page is even better. By the end of the story the main characters should be in a committed relationship.
Because Love Inspired sells to both CBA and ABA bookstores, we must adhere to CBA conventions. The stories may not include alcohol consumption by Christian characters, card playing, gambling or games of chance (including raffles), explicit scatological terms, hero and heroine remaining overnight together alone, Halloween celebrations, magic or the mention of intimate body parts. Lying is also problematic in the CBA market and characters who are Christian should avoid lying or deceiving others. Exceptions can be made but must be approved by an editor.

It’s All About Men — Calls for Submissions

September 30, 2011 by in category Archives tagged as ,

It’s about men this month, whether the theme is the new line from Ellora’s Cave, EC for Men, about sexy, strong hunks in uniform, or the strength of a king or lord.
Men in Uniform Anthology

Silver Publishing has started a new line, Men in Uniform, and are seeking submissions for 2012. Here’s the breakdown:
•    15K to 20K word count per short story/novella. 4 books per Anthology.
•    Seriously sexy stories about firemen, policemen, soldiers and sailors – we want to read some hot MM stories about men in…and out of uniform.
•    Any combination of M/F, M/F/M, M/M/F, M/M.
•    Heat Rating: 3+ Flames only!
When submitting, please enter “Men in Uniform.” Visit https://spsilverpublishing.com/pages-title-page-24 for due dates. For instance, to be eligible for the January 2012, submissions should be sent in by Oct. 31, 2011.
EC for Men
Ellora’s Cave is now accepting submissions for their new line EC for Men.
·      7,000 to 30,000 words
·      May contain relationships, but should focus more on the sex than the romance; Romantica is fine, Exotika is also encouraged
·      Realistic wording and dialogue for male characters (not the language women WISH men spoke); this extends to the male narrative
·      Written from male POV preferred
·      Should be aimed at male sexual fantasies (what men think of when they get off)
~ More of what men want or need from women: sex, love, acceptance, admiration, dirty talk; less of what they don’t need (judgment, drama, expectation of anticipating woman’s needs)
* Examples include, but are in no way limited to:
– Women taking the initiative during sex
– Female pursuit of the man
– Voyeurism of female/female sex (as well as F/M/F and F/F/M themes)
– Risky sexual situations or locations; a sense of the forbidden (e.g. the boss’s mistress, the maid, the college professor, sex in public, etc.)
For more information, visit http://www.jasminejade.com and click on Submissions.

Honor Guard
Decadent Publishing is looking for stories for their new Honor Guard line, which is composed of contemporary, multi-national romance stories. Heat level of 3-5 and word count between 10k-25k.

Setting: Countries around the world. The hero can be any alpha male. Military or covert ops: Marines, MP, CIA, Homeland Security, NSA, etc.

Heroine can be an American or foreign national. Her age should be 25+. Wherever your setting, we need local flavor. Tap your travel experiences! Give us fun, adventure, romance, interesting settings, strong characters and hot lovin’, cultural insights.

Kingdoms of Desire: Erotic Tales of Fantasy
Kingdoms of Desire: Erotic Tales of Fantasy is a place where lust and legend abound, and adventure, passion and danger entwine. Think mystical lands and creatures, kings and queens, knights and renegades, heroes and villains, warlords, maidens and princesses. Think battles and danger, honor and dishonor, good and evil. Most of all think hearts filled with passion and secret desire. This is a place where romantic chivalry is alive and well, but so too is romantic wickedness. This is a place where the good do not always win, and the bad are often more captivating and desirable than their altruistic counterparts. In these lush and timeless landscapes, the battle for flesh can be as important as the battle for power. Intrigue, sorcery, revenge, lawlessness, dark secrets and mysterious elixirs; entanglements with supernatural beings – everything is possible in these magical mythical landscapes. Think Game of Thrones and you get the picture!
Word count: 3,000 to 6,000 words. No reprints (be it print, digital, or online). Original fiction only. To be published by Cleis Press in autumn 2012. One-time payment in the range of USD $50-70 (payable on publication) and 2 copies of the anthology. Due by December 15, 2011. Visit http://mitziszereto.com for technical submission information.

August Calls for Submissions

August 1, 2011 by in category Archives tagged as ,

Seems like there continues to be a craving for things that go bump-in-the-night. We also continue to see a number of holiday calls for submissions, and expect this trend to continue as our year gets closer to ending.
Harlequin Nocturne Cravings
Let’s start out with an exciting call for Harlequin Nocturne. Harlequin Nocturne is looking to acquire bold, exciting, erotic paranormal romance short stories for its eBook program, Nocturne Cravings. These stories should be fast-paced paranormals with strong erotic fantasy and danger elements. Authors should feel comfortable exploring any and all sexual scenarios and shouldn’t shy away from graphically sensual situations. In fact, the short stories should contain many erotic scenes that compel and bind the characters together. Strong, emotional characters that grab the reader’s imagination are also essential.
We are looking for stories of vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, psychic powers, etc. set in contemporary times. Stories should deliver a dark, highly sensual read that will entertain readers and take them from everyday life into an atmospheric, complex world filled with characters struggling with life-and-death issues.
All stories should be capable of standing alone; all loose ends need to be tied up, and the relationship between hero and heroine should resolve itself in a satisfying manner.
Length is 15,000–25,000 words.
Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be considered from unpublished authors; no partials or queries, please. Submissions should be sent as a Word-compatible attachment. Submissions should also follow standard formatting guidelines and should be double-spaced and typed in a clear, legible font on numbered pages. Author name and title should appear as a header or footer on each page. Visit the Harlequin submission guidelines page for more information. Nocturne Cravings e-mail address: nocturnebites@harlequin.ca

·      They must focus on a couple
·      Safe sex is a must
·      Must be a romance-driven story
·      One or both main characters should be military or former personnel.
Tina’s B stories offer readers a diversion from the ordinary by introducing stories that explore higher levels of sexual intensity while maintaining the emotional value of relationships.
We encourage authors to write persuasive emotionally intense stories while fully developing their characters to the extreme and beyond sensuality.
Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines WILL NOT BE considered for publication.
Submit your completed polished manuscript to tina@xoxopublishing .com; Subject line: Tina’s Anthologies military. Deadline is Aug. 15, 2011.
LIKE A COMING WAVE
Merfolk and naiads cavort among the rolling waves, while selkies and sprites winnow below – though not so deep as the serpents or kraken, far beyond the reach of the sirens’ song or Charybdis and Scylla’s hungry mouths. The ocean is a vast playground of creatures real and imagined, rife with power and depth. We want to know how this translates into the sensuality and sexuality of those who live in and around Earth’s last frontier. How do merfolk court? Do the denizens of the sea get worked up by great storms? What happens if a naiad gets stuck in a tide pool? We’re looking for stories that focus on the humanity in the inhuman, the exploration of unfamiliar boundaries, and the instincts and seductions of creatures that never have to worry about getting somebody wet. Circlet Press welcomes sex-positive stories of all sexualities and preferences.
Submission Details: Length: Our preferred length is approximately 3,500 to 7,500 words, but we will consider the range from 2,000 to 10,000 words. All submissions must be made via email Andrea Trask, editor, at the following address: blisswrites@gmail.com. Deadline: July 31, 2011.
All stories must include explicit sexuality and erotic focus. Romantic content is welcome, but in a short story remember to keep the details on the action and its effects on the main character’s internal point of view. Whether first person or third person, a strong, singular narrative voice is our preference (no ‘head hopping’ or swapping points of view within scene from one character to the other).
For more details on our editorial preferences, see the general submission guidelines on circlet.com (http://www.circlet.com/?page_id=11). We highly recommend reading the guidelines, especially the “do not send” list, to increase your chances of sending us something we’ll love.
Originals only, no reprints. We purchase first rights for inclusion in the ebook anthology for $25, with the additional rights to a print edition later which would also be paid $25 if a print edition happens. Authors retain the rights to the individual stories; Circlet exercises rights to the anthology as a whole.
THANKSGIVING ANTHOLOGY

Cooking a turkey takes hours, and why waste it? What are your characters thankful for on this long holiday weekend? What will they be thankful for before the dinner is served? How would your characters handle the awkward introduction of an arch rival to the family Thanksgiving getaway?

Silver Publishing is looking for high-quality erotic romance stories for a Thanksgiving anthology. Details: Word Count- 5-18K. Genre- All genres of erotic romance are welcome. Deadline: Aug. 13, 2011; Release date:  November 19, 2011.

For submission guidelines, please visit the submission page. When submitting your manuscript , please clearly state that you’re submitting for the “Thanksgiving Anthology” Submission Call.
