THE FUN OF PROMOTION–Enjoy the Game

May 6, 2017 by in category Pets, Romance & Lots of Suspense by Linda O. Johnston tagged as , , , ,

Pets Romance & Lots of SuspenceThe third book in my Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries, BAD TO THE BONE, will be officially released in a couple of days–May 8.  And I’ve been quite busy promoting it already.

Do I enjoy promotion?  Yes and no.  I used to be uncomfortable getting in front of crowds doing any kind of public speaking.  Now I do it all the time.

For example, I recently attended Malice Domestic, a conference focusing on cozy mysteries.  Both authors and fans attend, and it’s a lot of fun.  I was on a panel called The “Paws” that Detect: Animal Companions with several other authors, and we were asked questions and got to explain how the animals in our books help our stories.  Fun!

I also went to an authors’ event at a local library branch that was reopening after being remodeled.  There, I was on a panel discussing–no, not dogs this time, but promotion.  I got to share ideas with the other panelists who approached part of it similarly and some differently.

I attended the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books a few weeks ago, where I encouraged passersby into the romance writers’ booth and also did some signings at the mystery writers’ booths.  I talked to a lot of people there, and not only about my writing–though that played a major part.

I’m attending a birthday bash at the Mysterious Galaxy bookstore soon, where I’ll also get to talk about my new release.

Then there are all the blogs I do–including A Slice of Orange plus my other scheduled ones such as Killer Hobbies, Killer Characters, and InkSpot.   And I’m also currently on a blog tour to promote my new release, where I’ve written blogs and responded to interview questions for some sites and will also have my new book reviewed or highlighted on other sites.

So what are the things I enjoy about all this?  I get to talk about myself and my writing and meet other people and share ideas and… well, I’ve definitely learned that writing isn’t only about writing.  Not now–not when one is published.  So I might as well have fun doing it, since it’s part of the game!

PETS, ROMANCE & LOTS OF SUSPENSE

April 6, 2017 by in category Pets, Romance & Lots of Suspense by Linda O. Johnston tagged as , ,

Pets, romance anPets Romance & Lots of Suspenced lots of suspense. That’s me! Or at least that’s my theme on the revamped A Slice of Orange blog.
Why? Well, first, everything I write these days includes dogs, including my paranormal romances for Harlequin Nocturne, my mysteries that I write for Midnight Ink, including my Barkery & Biscuits series, and, soon, my new K-9 Ranch miniseries for Harlequin Romantic Suspense.
Also, everything I write includes romance. As I mentioned, I write for two Harlequin series, which are, of course, romances. And all the protagonists in my mysteries have romantic interests. The mysteries don’t always have a HEABad to the Bone
(happily ever after) when it comes to the romances, but of course the mysteries get solved in each one.
And that leads me into suspense. Everything I write also includes some degree of suspense, not just my mysteries but also my romances–and I don’t just mean my Harlequin Romantic Suspense novels.

So join me here at my Slice of Orange blog on the sixth day of each month, and I’ll be sure to include something regarding one or all of those themes.
CovertAllianceCoverBy the way, I have two new novels about to be published: Bad to the Bone, the third Barkery & Biscuits Mystery in May, and Protector Wolf, the eighth Alpha Force Harlequin Nocturne in June–about a covert military unit of shapeshifters.

And even though this blog is no longer sponsored by the Orange County Chapter of Romance Writers of America, I hope to see you often at the chapter’s meetings!

This New Year

Happy New Year everyone!

This new year is going awfully fast already. I looked at my calendar and realized it was almost the 6th of the month–my day to post here at A Slice of Orange. Where did the first days of this year go?
This year has started out fairly busy. For one thing, I won’t be able to attend the first and second OCC meetings of 2017, even though I’d love to. But the reasons are good ones: I’m going to be attending the Santa Clarita Library’s Celebration of Authors on January 14, and I’ll be attending a relative’s wedding on February 11.
As I said, good reasons–but I’ll miss OCC and its wonderful members!
This year promises to be a busy one for me. As always, I’m working on books under deadline. Just sent off one manuscript for a Harlequin Romantic Suspense, and starting my fourth mystery in my Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries. My next published novel will be the third Barkery book, Bad to the Bone, which will be a May release, and in June my next Harlequin Nocturne in my Alpha Force series, about a covert military unit of shapeshifters, will come out: Protector Wolf.

I hope you all have a wonderful year filled with everything you want. And I hope to see you in March!

I’m Here This Month

November 6, 2016 by in category Pets, Romance & Lots of Suspense by Linda O. Johnston tagged as

I purposely didn’t do a blog post here at A Slice of Orange last month.  I suspected I wasn’t going to be able to attend the Birthday Bash, and some of the posts that were already there told people lots about what would be going on.  I figured they were more interesting than anything I had to say.

But I’m back now.  I do hope to attend the regular OCC meeting this month.  I enjoy them and really missed being able to attend the Birthday Bash.  But life happens.

I’ve heard some about how the Birthday Bash went–great, of course!  Even so, I’ll ask questions at the next meeting.  I’m sure I’ll hear lots of good stuff, which will make me feel even worse that I wasn’t there.  OCC is one wonderful organization and I’ve belonged for a long time and do enjoy meeting up with the members.   I’ve attended the Birthday Bash before and always find them fun and inspirational and a really good time.

But then, that can also be said of the regular meetings.  So, regarding the next one and as I often say, I hope to see you there!

Labor Day Holiday Week

September 6, 2016 by in category Pets, Romance & Lots of Suspense by Linda O. Johnston tagged as

I mentioned this on another blog this week, but Happy Labor Day Week, everyone.  I used to pay a lot of attention to this and other holidays when I was a working attorney.  Now that I’m a full time writer, though, I’m generally aware of holidays but don’t give them much thought except in interest of what they celebrate.  But days off?  Hah!

I work every day, and I’m sure every one of you who’s also a writer does the same even if you have another job.  Of course those of you in retail and other professions might not get the holiday off anyway, which may be a shame depending on your situation.  At least writers choose to work constantly.  Sort of.  Our minds tell us what to do, every waking moment of the day and often during sleeping moments, too.

Me?  I’m either writing (including coming up with ideas and plotting), editing or promoting, and often it’s a combo of two or three–all the time.  Before I became a full time writer I could say the same, but I often cherished those days off to work on writing-related stuff, so those holidays weren’t days off for me then either.

One of the fun things about OCC is being in touch with people at many stages of their writing.  Many do have full time jobs and work their writing in the way I used to.  Others are like me, and writing is their life.  Professional life, that is.  Families always come first–including pets.

Unsurprisingly, I’m looking forward to Saturday’s meeting at the end of this holiday week.  In fact, I was asked to participate on a panel then but fortunately there was some flexibility as to when that panel was to occur, so I raised my hand to choose the other date.

Enjoy the rest of your week–and hope to see you at the meeting!
