I missed you
when I turned the corner
near the old bakery
in the drifting
mellow Columbia brews,
fresh loaves and
Darjeeling teas.
It was then I stopped
in the middle of the street
paralyzed in my dream
of what might have been
and what was never meant to be
until then
I had traced
the veins of fallen leaves, that autumn,
watched them crinkle and dry,
crumble easily
now I stand, rooted
on the sidewalk,
pearly white confetti sprinkled
below flowering trees
by the old bakery.

Until I can fly . . . as the sun goes down
and waves come closer
with the rising tide
life spills . . .
forming red rivulets in sand
in the vast desert
man’s fury against man
reasons I do not understand
spring has come
and gone
summer breeze nudges
dense foliage to dance
