It’s All About Men — Calls for Submissions

September 30, 2011 by in category Archives tagged as ,

It’s about men this month, whether the theme is the new line from Ellora’s Cave, EC for Men, about sexy, strong hunks in uniform, or the strength of a king or lord.
Men in Uniform Anthology

Silver Publishing has started a new line, Men in Uniform, and are seeking submissions for 2012. Here’s the breakdown:
•    15K to 20K word count per short story/novella. 4 books per Anthology.
•    Seriously sexy stories about firemen, policemen, soldiers and sailors – we want to read some hot MM stories about men in…and out of uniform.
•    Any combination of M/F, M/F/M, M/M/F, M/M.
•    Heat Rating: 3+ Flames only!
When submitting, please enter “Men in Uniform.” Visit https://spsilverpublishing.com/pages-title-page-24 for due dates. For instance, to be eligible for the January 2012, submissions should be sent in by Oct. 31, 2011.
EC for Men
Ellora’s Cave is now accepting submissions for their new line EC for Men.
·      7,000 to 30,000 words
·      May contain relationships, but should focus more on the sex than the romance; Romantica is fine, Exotika is also encouraged
·      Realistic wording and dialogue for male characters (not the language women WISH men spoke); this extends to the male narrative
·      Written from male POV preferred
·      Should be aimed at male sexual fantasies (what men think of when they get off)
~ More of what men want or need from women: sex, love, acceptance, admiration, dirty talk; less of what they don’t need (judgment, drama, expectation of anticipating woman’s needs)
* Examples include, but are in no way limited to:
– Women taking the initiative during sex
– Female pursuit of the man
– Voyeurism of female/female sex (as well as F/M/F and F/F/M themes)
– Risky sexual situations or locations; a sense of the forbidden (e.g. the boss’s mistress, the maid, the college professor, sex in public, etc.)
For more information, visit http://www.jasminejade.com and click on Submissions.

Honor Guard
Decadent Publishing is looking for stories for their new Honor Guard line, which is composed of contemporary, multi-national romance stories. Heat level of 3-5 and word count between 10k-25k.

Setting: Countries around the world. The hero can be any alpha male. Military or covert ops: Marines, MP, CIA, Homeland Security, NSA, etc.

Heroine can be an American or foreign national. Her age should be 25+. Wherever your setting, we need local flavor. Tap your travel experiences! Give us fun, adventure, romance, interesting settings, strong characters and hot lovin’, cultural insights.

Kingdoms of Desire: Erotic Tales of Fantasy
Kingdoms of Desire: Erotic Tales of Fantasy is a place where lust and legend abound, and adventure, passion and danger entwine. Think mystical lands and creatures, kings and queens, knights and renegades, heroes and villains, warlords, maidens and princesses. Think battles and danger, honor and dishonor, good and evil. Most of all think hearts filled with passion and secret desire. This is a place where romantic chivalry is alive and well, but so too is romantic wickedness. This is a place where the good do not always win, and the bad are often more captivating and desirable than their altruistic counterparts. In these lush and timeless landscapes, the battle for flesh can be as important as the battle for power. Intrigue, sorcery, revenge, lawlessness, dark secrets and mysterious elixirs; entanglements with supernatural beings – everything is possible in these magical mythical landscapes. Think Game of Thrones and you get the picture!
Word count: 3,000 to 6,000 words. No reprints (be it print, digital, or online). Original fiction only. To be published by Cleis Press in autumn 2012. One-time payment in the range of USD $50-70 (payable on publication) and 2 copies of the anthology. Due by December 15, 2011. Visit http://mitziszereto.com for technical submission information.

An Eclectic Mix of Calls for Submissions

September 1, 2011 by in category Archives tagged as , ,

Guardian angels may play a role in multiple calls this month. While Chicken Soup for the Soul is looking for nonfiction articles that offer a glimpse into the relationship some experience with those who have passed on, Still Moments Publishing is looking for all-things romance for a Christmas anthology. And, if the year didn’t feel like it was passing quickly enough, Total E-Bound has put out its Valentine’s 2012 call!
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Messages from Heaven
101 Miraculous Stories of Signs from Beyond, Amazing Connections, and Love that Doesn’t Die
When our loved ones leave this world, our connection with them does not end. Death takes away their physical presence, but not their spirit, and we often sense them after they have gone. Sometimes we see or hear from them after they’ve passed, giving us signs and messages from beyond.
We want to hear from you if you have experienced the other side or received a sign or signal from a loved one who has passed. Has someone who has died come to you in a dream? Given you counsel or comfort? Have you gone beyond, but returned to life with new knowledge, insight, or awareness? Have you intuitively known the moment someone died? Share your true, touching, and astounding stories about messages from heaven or your own experiences with dying and coming back.
This book is for everyone who has a story, whether religious or secular. Please note that since we see many stories about messages from heaven in the form of rainbows, bird, butterflies, and coins, we will only be able to use a few stories on those types of messages from beyond.
Here are some possible story topics, but we know you can think of more:
  • Words of wisdom from a loved one who has passed
  • Personal exchanges with a loved one who has passed
  • Omens or visions from beyond
  • Receiving guidance or lessons from a loved one who has passed
  • Revelations from beyond
  • Apparitions from beyond
  • Signs from beyond from a loved one
  • Knowing the exact moment someone passed
Please remember, we do not like “as told to” stories. Please write in the first person about yourself or someone close to you. If you ghostwrite a story for someone else we will list their name as the author. If a story was previously published, we will probably not use it unless it ran in a small circulation venue. Let us know where the story was previously published in the “Comments” section of the submission form.
If your story is chosen, you will be a published author and your bio will be printed in the book if you so choose. You will also receive a check for $200 and 10 free copies of your book, worth more than $100. You will retain the copyright for your story and you will retain the right to resell it.
This is a new addition to our spring 2012 line-up, with a quick production schedule! Deadline for submissions is October 3.
Submissions go to: http://chickensoup.com Select the Submit Your Story link on the left tool bar and follow the directions.

  • Query letter which includes your contact information, word count and brief writing biography

August Calls for Submissions

August 1, 2011 by in category Archives tagged as ,

Seems like there continues to be a craving for things that go bump-in-the-night. We also continue to see a number of holiday calls for submissions, and expect this trend to continue as our year gets closer to ending.
Harlequin Nocturne Cravings
Let’s start out with an exciting call for Harlequin Nocturne. Harlequin Nocturne is looking to acquire bold, exciting, erotic paranormal romance short stories for its eBook program, Nocturne Cravings. These stories should be fast-paced paranormals with strong erotic fantasy and danger elements. Authors should feel comfortable exploring any and all sexual scenarios and shouldn’t shy away from graphically sensual situations. In fact, the short stories should contain many erotic scenes that compel and bind the characters together. Strong, emotional characters that grab the reader’s imagination are also essential.
We are looking for stories of vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, psychic powers, etc. set in contemporary times. Stories should deliver a dark, highly sensual read that will entertain readers and take them from everyday life into an atmospheric, complex world filled with characters struggling with life-and-death issues.
All stories should be capable of standing alone; all loose ends need to be tied up, and the relationship between hero and heroine should resolve itself in a satisfying manner.
Length is 15,000–25,000 words.
 Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be considered from unpublished authors; no partials or queries, please. Submissions should be sent as a Word-compatible attachment. Submissions should also follow standard formatting guidelines and should be double-spaced and typed in a clear, legible font on numbered pages. Author name and title should appear as a header or footer on each page. Visit the Harlequin submission guidelines page for more information. Nocturne Cravings e-mail address: nocturnebites@harlequin.ca

Suggested length is 2,000 to 5,000 words, and the deadline is September 30, 2011. These stories can be any sub-genre that falls within the regular submission guidelines.

Between the Lines with Louisa Bacio

June 6, 2011 by in category Interviews tagged as , ,
Interview conducted by Brenda Parrish

The following article was first printed in the June 2011 Orange Blossom, the newsletter for Orange County Romance Writers. Permission granted to reprint or forward with proper credit to author and newsletter.

In addition to writing, working as an editor for magazines and publishers, Louisa Bacio teaches college classes in writing and popular culture. Bacio lives in Southern California with her adoring husband, two wonderful and challenging daughters and a houseful of pets.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: You are a “digital first” author and are helping to usher in a new era in books.  It’s an exciting time.  Can you elaborate on your own experiences with reading ebooks?  When did you start, what device(s) do you use? What do you see are the advantages to ebooks over traditional books? Etc.
A: I come from a traditional print background, working for newspapers and magazines. My degree is in journalism, and I continue to value holding a magazine and looking at the latest styles on the beach. All that said, ereaders and books are extremely convenient and portable. I’ve read ebooks via .pdfs on the computer, and also own a Kindle and an iPad. When I travel, it’s fantastic to bring one reader, and when you finish a book, you can simply purchase and download another. No more lugging around five books for a weeklong trip. For the most part, the ebooks also are less expensive. There have been a few occasions, though, where authors such as Stephen King come out with a new book available in hardback, and then it’s not released as an ebook for a few months later (ugh!). And, the most recent one, I could purchase for $9.99 as an ebook, or something like $10.01 as a hardback delivered via Amazon on the day of release. I chose the hardback. Also, I have the Kindle app on my iPhone. If I’m out at a doctor’s appointment and have a long wait – then I can bring up my book and it’ll sync to the latest place I was reading at home.
Are there negatives? For some reason, paragraph or scene breaks can be off in an ebook format, so I sometimes need to shift more mentally. Also, I don’t trust myself reading the ebook in a precarious position, such as in the bathtub or the spa. Finally, those pesky airlines make you turn off your electronic devices on take-off and landing, so I usually bring a magazine or paperback then.
Q:  Is the publication process much different in e-publishing than it is with traditional publishing?  Is there an advantage to the author/reader in epub over traditional pub?
A: From what I know, the books come out much quicker via electronic publishing. I know people with book contracts, and the release is scheduled for a year to 18 months out. Hello! I know that when I turn in a book, depending upon the editing process, it’ll be out in a month to six weeks. A negative to that, though, is that you don’t get all that lead time, and submit the cover and galley for reviews to coincide with the release. I looked once and RT Magazine wanted books something like six months before release – probably won’t happen with my electronic publisher.
Q: You have a fascinating set-up for your new book.  You associate three types of characters in an intimate relationship that are usually at odds with one another.  How did you generate that idea and what were your challenges in trying to make it work?
A: My publisher requested an erotic paranormal, and I immediately thought: “What’s the ultimate fantasy” Well, you get both – the vampire and the werewolf. You don’t have to decide and choose between one or the other. Now that might not be everyone’s fantasy but it played into my ‘writing’ fantasy quite well. Further, my agent asked how I would make the vampire and werewolf stand each other – and why not?
 Challenge set, and the imagination took over.
Q: What tools do you use when plotting out your novel?  Can you give us an outline of your process?
A: For those who are plotter, you’re going to be disappointed. I’m a pantster. I’ve got a good idea of where I want the story to go, and a number of the scenes that will be included, but I don’t outline or plot the book. And, I don’t write in consecutive order. Instead, the writing flows depending upon mood. Feeling bad one day? All right, then I’ll tackle the more emotional, gritty scenes. Feeling all lovey-dovey? Then it’s time to hit the romantic scenes. Rather than constraining myself with an A to B to C structure line, I write what feels natural.
Sound good? Afterward, I print the entire novel and use a three-ring binder to move chapters around, fill in spaces, etc. The front and back of the manuscript get written on. Amazing how it all comes together at the end.
Q: How about promotion?  How does an epublisher do promotion differently from a traditional publisher?
 A: Differences don’t separate between an epublisher and a traditional publisher, but also between publishing houses themselves. Ravenous Romance sends books out to reviewers and also arranges some ads. I’m not privy to knowing all of their marketing plans, but I have come across some ads for The Vampire, The Witch & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Threesome in All-Romance Ebooks, and I didn’t purchase them!
I am also an editor for the new boutique cross-platform publisher Entangled Publishing. They have a dedicated marketing staff and recently hired a professional in branding to work with the authors and editors in establishing their niches in the marketplace. Since I’m more behind-the-scenes with the business end, I can see the steps being taken.
Finally, the support network among authors within the industry is tremendous. My agent Saritza Hernandez, with the L. Perkins Agency, set up a loop with her authors, and we cross-promote, and the same thing happens with Ravenous authors and those that I’ve met on sites such as Savvy Authors, and of course locally such as our OCC/RWA chapter.
Q: What advice would you like to give to an aspiring author?
A: Keep pushing yourself, and don’t give up. Now that I’ve published two books, and have contracts for three more, my husband likes to remind me of those nights where I cried because I would ‘never finish a book, and never be published.’
Also, enjoy those baby steps of progress – celebrate each moment of validation. And finally, rely upon those wacky, author-friends of yours, who do understand what it feels like, and what you’re going through. We can relate like no other.
Q: What’s up next for you? What are you working on?
A: My next book is within the Sex University ‘universe,’ which  means it’s a loose sequel to my first novel. One of the main characters is Officer Margaret ‘Marge’ Neil, who was briefly introduced in the first book. As I wrote about Maggie – she’s transforming – in Physical Education, I knew that there was much more to her character. It should be out mid-summer. And then in the fall, I’ll be releasing book 2 in The Vampire, The Witch & The Werewolf series, and readers will fall in love with Trevor’s sister, Silver, who’ll be coming into her own as a female werewolf. There are not enough kick-ass female werewolves in the world!
Along with The Vampire, The Witch and the Werewolf, Louisa’s debut novel Physical Education is available through Ravenous Romance, and Amazon.  Check out the latest happenings via her blog http://louisabacio.blogspot.com
