Leaving PAW

December 6, 2013 by in category Pets, Romance & Lots of Suspense by Linda O. Johnston tagged as , , , , ,

Okay, I’m not really leaving PAW. In fact, I hope to remain a proud member for a long time to come. But I’ve been helping to run PAW for several years now, starting when our dearly missed Charlotte Lobb was in charge and now being Debra Holland’s backup.

Soon Tara Lain and Skylar Kade will be taking over. I’m delighted! Debra’s done a great job despite my limited backup, and I’m sure our new PAW people will do it well, too.

This month, Karen Fulbright of Tailored Book Trailers will be our guest for part of the PAW meeting. She did a book trailer for me–the one I won from her at RWA National, for my Pet Rescue Mystery OODLES OF POODLES, and it’s really fun!

Hope to see you there or at the regular OCC meeting.

Why I wrote Naked Sushi by Jina Bacarr

October 11, 2013 by in category Archives tagged as , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I’ve always been a geek.

I got my first computer when the screen was black and the print orange. I was a member of an infamous BBS (bulletin board system) back in the day when I wrote a column for a computer magazine called “Sweet Savage Byte.”

I did podcasts on a video camera with a floppy disk that only allowed you to record a minute of time. I remember setting this up in a Borders bookstore in Hollywood. Yes, those were the days…

I’m also a huge James Bond fan.

And I love Covert Affairs with the fab heroine Annie Walker.

You put all that together and you get…Naked Sushi.

It’s also a story about facing the fear of rejection. We’ve all been there. Often that’s the reason we don’t finish a manuscript because we’re afraid of rejection. In Naked Sushi, Pepper O’Malley realizes with the help of the hero that’s what is keeping her from achieving her dream of becoming a spy. She poses as a naked sushi model to get the goods on her sleazy ex-boss with the hero FBI hottie getting in on the action in this excerpt from Naked Sushi.

Six days days until Naked Sushi, my Cosmo Red-Hot Read from Harlequin, is released! So here are two videos with an excerpt from my story. What’s wild is that we’ve gone from 60 seconds max in the early days of video to 6 seconds on Vine and 16 seconds on Instagram

What’s fun is that the Vine video loops forever and you can take your time reading the sexy snippet. I found some hot music that adds to the fun atmos.

The Instagram video is longer, but it doesn’t loop.

I enjoy experimenting with new ways to present excerpts and since Pepper is a video programmer at a computer game company, this is a fun way to showcase her story.

I had a blast writing this story and I’m thrilled that here is an opportunity for all girls who consider themselves tech-heads to show they’re fun, fearless females!

Pepper hits the digital stores on October 15th.

PS — the silky border that I used as a frame around my videos is a remnant from ornate kimono designed by a designer I met when I was taking kimono lessons from a Japanese sensei

Naked Sushi, Harlequin, and Cosmo, oh my! by Jina Bacarr

September 11, 2013 by in category Archives tagged as , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The hot, lazy days of summer heated up last month when Harlequin editors, Gail Chasan and Malle Vallik came to speak at our August OCC meeting.

I was especially thrilled to see Malle Vallik. I’ll never forget the excitement racing through me when I found out that Malle wanted my NAKED SUSHI novella for the new Cosmo Red-Hot Read line from Harlequin. Not only did the Harlequin team have to approve each manuscript, but also the team from Cosmopolitan. This was a story I loved because I used my own experiences producing video podcasts as well as working for a computer magazine and a video game company to create her character.

A selfie of Malle and me — somehow the OCC Chapter sign got reversed when I put it up on Instagram.

In Naked Sushi, Pepper O’Malley is a tech-head but under that flannel shirt, she’s just itchin’ to find the right guy and fall in love. And she wants to be a spy:

Here’s the cover copy:

A Delicious Mistake

One day I’m getting canned from my job as a computer programmer for having wild copy-room sex with a guy I thought was the new game designer. The next, I’m crashing my ex-boss’s business lunch in a creative attempt to get my job back and men are eating sushi off my naked body!

That’s when I realize a) My ex-boss is a hiding corporate secrets b) Hot copy-room guy is an undercover FBI agent c) I would make a kick-ass spy!

Then Special Agent Hottie brings out his cuffs, and things get really interesting…

WHAT DOES ROMANCE MATTER?

August 27, 2013 by in category Guest Posts, Spotlight tagged as , , ,

Why does the romance genre dominate book sales?  It’s a question that dozens of people have tried to answer.  On Valentine’s Day, article after article attempts to explore the concept.  Non-fiction books are written about it, essays are printed.  Internet sites Chat about it.

The truth is there is no single answer.

From the time we’re teenagers, we’re thinking about finding a mate.  When we’re old and alone, our spouse long gone, we’re remembering the romantic days when we fell in love, the days we spent with someone who loved us.

From the start, it’s a journey fraught with perils.  Today, with people living in cities, the odds of finding the right mate are mind-boggling.  Thousands of bars and restaurants, millions of people all searching for someone.  People turn to Internet dating to improve their chances of finding a person with the same interests…someone they might have a chance to love.

The same journey happens in a Romance novel and it’s fraught with even more peril.  As the reader turns the pages, for a brief time, he or she gets to feel all the wonderful emotions a man or woman feels when they fall in love.

In my latest book, AGAINST THE MARK, the nineth in my AGAINST series, Tyler Brodie, a private investigator, meets Haley Warren, the woman who hires him to find the truth about her father’s murder.  The child of a broken home, Haley has no interest in romance.  She doesn’t believe in happy endings.

But Ty is a hard man to resist.  Carefree and fun-loving on the surface, Ty is ex-military, a man who knows how to handle himself in a tough situation.  A man nearly irresistible to women.  Ty wants Haley, and it doesn’t take long for her to realize that she wants him.  But Haley is afraid to risk her heart.  It takes nearly getting killed before Haley realizes that love is worth the risk.

The best part about reading a Romance is that from the very first page, the reader secretly knows that whatever perils the couple faces, whatever suffering they endure, will be worth it.

Because by the last page of the book, the lovers are going to get the happy ending they deserve, the forever kind of love we all dream of finding.

I hope you’ll watch for Ty and Haley in AGAINST THE MARK, out August 27th.  And in June of next year watch for Ty’s cousin, Dylan Brodie, in AGAINST THE WILD, the first of three Against books set in Alaska.
What is your favorite romance genre?

Till then very best wishes and happy reading.

Cosmo Red-Hot Read from Harlequin: NAKED SUSHI gets a Cover

August 11, 2013 by in category Archives tagged as , , , , , , , , ,

I’m a Cosmo Cover Girl!!

Well, not really, but I feel like one. The glam cover shoot, the publicity, the magazine ads, and the video:

I love this video — I especially love the Cosmo model with the glasses. Did you see her? When I saw her I said, “That’s my Pepper!!” (She reminds me of my heroine in NAKED SUSHI–she appears about 20 seconds into the video.) She’s a fun, fearless female as befits the Cosmo brand touted in their magazine.

I may not be a Cosmo Cover Girl, but I am a Fun, Fearless Female.

I never would have gotten this far if I wasn’t.

How ’bout you? Are you a fun, fearless female?
