Hope, like the horizon
glimmers in the distance

my eyes grow weary
as I watch it burn
then cool in the twilight
each day until
darkness sweeps
over the edges and I can see
no more

only to repeat when I wake
from sleep

once again, clinging to
fine rays as they
emerge in luminous shades
above sleepy slopes
assuring me

there is no end
to Hope.

Grey Skies

 I should have cut a piece of blue sky
 or maybe two

 one for each pocket 
 the last time it stretched 
 above me
 unblemished and clear,
 but I forgot it wouldn't last--
 no, it never does. 

 At least I have the memory 
 of its cerulean loveliness
 when the days are dark

 faint though it is 
 it still hovers like a lost star
 searching for a place in 
 my universe.

 I glisten in tears 
 like an April dawn,
  
 covered in dew
 like blades of grass,
  
 whispering notes
 like softly falling raindrops,
  
 I call your name 
 like one who is lost –
  
 listen achingly for the sound
 of your answering call.

 I hold fragments
 of you
 in my ash-grazed hands
 to put them 
 in an urn

 they sound like 
 empty shells as I 
 drop them one by one

 the fullness 
 in my heart leaves
 no room for echoes

 I know your footsteps
 will never return.

The Gardener
 
  You water me  
 that I may grow 
 lush and luxurious
  
 you prune me 
 when my branches stray
 too far out or too high
  
 you mulch me when
 you think I may
 wilt or die
  
 you nurture me as if
 I’m too frail to stand
 on my own
  
 as if without you
 I may fail to thrive
  
 in truth, maybe it is you
 who needs me,
 to survive.
