What could be better than FREE BOOKS??

That’s right! To celebrate 60 years of bringing romance to the world, Harlequin/Silhouette is giving away 16 books, FREE.

Just go to this site,http://www.harlequincelebrates.com/ and download them!

I’m pleased and honored to say that one of my books, BABY BONANZA is one of the books offered.

But why is this good for writers? That’s easy. Harlequin/Silhouette publishes 72 books a MONTH. That means even when the economy is rough and other publishing houses are being cautious, Harlequin/Silhouette is always looking for writers!

Why shouldn’t that be YOU??

So go to the site, get some free books and study them. Figure out which line your heart leans toward and then sit down and write. Polish. Perfect. And then submit.

Who knows?? Maybe the next time Harlequin/Silhouette gives away books, yours might be one of them!

Maureen Child is the author of more than 100 romance novels and novellas. At the moment, she’s hard at work on her next Silhouette Desire.

The Write Way…….

I missed my regular posting day on the 17th, since I forgot about everything but finishing my book that day! Anyway, here I am, making up for it!
I was thinking about First Steps the other day and it occurred to me that first steps happen everywhere in your writing career. There are writers like Kate Carlisle, who are taking their First Steps in seeing their book on the shelves. First book published. Nothing more exciting really. And Homicide in Hardcover is sure to do fabulously well! It’s a great story.

Then there’s our own Jennifer Apodaca, who’s taking a First Step into a whole new genre. As Jennifer Lyon, she’s got the first book in her new Witch Hunter series coming out. And Blood Magic is going to be amazing. It’s a great book with a terrific story and characters. Still, it’s a First Step and that can be terrifying.
And then there’s me. Bedeviled is the First Step in a new paranormal series for me. Yes, I’ve done paranormal before. I’ve started series before and no, this is really not anywhere close to my first book.
But it’s still scary. Every First Step is intimidating and filled with doubts and worries and CAN I PULL IT OFF moments.
No matter where you are on the publishing road, those First Steps are terrirfying.

The only way to get past the fear is to take the step anyway. So finish the book you’re working on. Send in that proposal. Enter that contest. Every First Step brings you that much closer to the NEXT First Step. And that brings you closer to your goal.

So it’s Christmas time again–and where did the year go??
I’ve spent most of this year, head down, eyes on the screen, fingers tapping wildly. But now that Christmas is here, I’m slowing down, despite the deadline looming.
You know what? It’s important to step back. To give yourself time and permission to simply BE. To enjoy the holidays, no matter which one you’re celebrating.
To hug your family, to bake cookies, to play with your kids, to snuggle on the couch.
Yes, work is important and that’s why we’re all here, members of this chapter, because we love books. And writing. And I do believe I have the best job in the world.
But at the end of the day……..LIFE comes first. Don’t forget to enjoy yours!
Merry Christmas! And to those of you celebrating other, just as special holidays this year, I wish you joy, love and most of all, I wish us all peace.

Maureen Child is the award winning author of more than 100 romance novels…….And today, she’s baking Christmas cookies……..

My big worry this weekend was the deadline hovering over my head like a razor sharp machete just waiting to swing down and well….you know.
Then the fires kicked off. That’s a picture of the sun taken from my front porch and we were about forty miles from the closest fire. The smoke and ash in the air were incredible and the yellow light coloring the world was extremely weird.
But, since we are Orange County Romance Writers, I want to put this hope out there that all of our friends and their families came through these wildfires safely. There are a lot of things more important than deadlines.

Ahhhh………another year, another conference!
Hard to believe National has already come and gone…….But here we are. We’ve mostly recovered, we’ve filed away all the notes and tidbits we picked up in San Francisco, and we’ve finally finished dissecting every conversation we had, looking for the ways we screwed up or said the wrong thing!
Time to move on. And what does that mean, you ask??
It means it’s back to work. Back to writing. Back to racking up the daily page count and meeting all of those deadlines. Whether they’re self imposed or set down in contracts, meeting those deadlines counts.
Did you get a request for a partial from one of the editors or agents you met at conference? Then don’t just sit there, get it shined up and out the door. And while your baby is sitting on that desk, tapping its proverbial toes, waiting to be read, you should be sitting at YOUR desk, working on the next proposal. Don’t sit there fingers crossed, hoping for luck.
Build your own luck.
I’m not sure who said it originally, but I heard a great quote in one of the workshops at conference……..If you want to succeed, double your failure rate………
Makes sense. You’ll never succeed if you’re not trying. So get those proposals out there. Take a shot. Make your dreams come true while you’ve still got time!
Maureen Child is the author of more than 100 romance novels and novellas. Right now, she’s typing crazily, rushing to meet those deadlines………
