Happy Holidays! | Linda O. Johnston | A Slice of Orange

Happy Holidays!

I’ll be missing another OCC meeting this month.  This holiday season, I’ve unfortunately had a lot of conflicts between events I want to attend.  Last weekend, I managed to stop in at a lunchtime party given by a dog club I belong to, then head to a joint party given by the local chapters of both Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime.

Next weekend, when OCC meets, I will be at the Glendale Author Signing Festival.  Unfortunately, there’s no way I can work out being in both Brea and Glendale at the same time.  Wish I could–especially since this month’s program sounds great!

I’m just hoping that next year is more flexible.  I have belonged to OCC for quite a while and love it and its members.  Getting to more meetings is definitely a goal of mine, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that.

So, hopefully, see you in January!  And I’ll have lots of news next year…

OCC And Me by @lindaojohnston #amwritingromance #cozymysteries

Pets Romance & Lots of Suspence
OCC’s most recent Birthday Bash occurred between my last post and this one.  Happy Birthday, OCC!  I did attend the main events on that Saturday, although I didn’t stay overnight and I missed the pajama parties.

But getting together with fellow members, hearing the speakers, participating in drawings–it was all wonderful!  I’m a long-time member of OCC, although there are plenty of others who’ve belonged even longer.  I love the chapter and am good buddies with quite a few of the members.

Right now, I just want to say thanks to all of you who put the Birthday Bash together, and those of you who do such a wonderful job of running the chapter.  Yay, OCC!

emaginings: Romance Fantasies

February 16, 2013 by in category Archives tagged as , , , , , ,

When I joined OCC in 1988, I knew very little about writing romance. One of the first Special Events I attended was a day long workshop at the Fullerton Library taught by Ann Maxwell, aka Elizabeth Lowell. It was an amazing overview of writing romance fiction.
One of the things she said that stuck in my mind was how important it was to tap into the reader’s romantic fantasies. She went on to list some of the more popular fantasies, like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, the Guardian fantasy, and the captive story. That day I decided I wanted to write a captive story, and eventually decided to set it against the backdrop of the French & Indian War where frontier settlers were taken hostage by war parties led by French officers.
The captive story is an old one, with roots in the Greek myth of Persephone in the Underworld, and in reality. Among tribal societies, marriage by capture was not uncommon, a pre-scientific method of enlarging the gene pool. In our own time, the Stockholm Syndrome has been observed, in which hostages begin to identify with their captors. Though “marriage by capture” is no longer practiced, the story still resonates in the collective unconscious.
That book became Rogue’s Hostage, which was a finalist in a number of contests including the Orange Rose and was eventually published by Amber Quill Press in 2003. In a few weeks it is getting a new incarnation as an indie book with a sensual new cover designed by OCC’s talented Lex Valentine.
This is the book of my heart and I’d never have finished and published it without the wonderful educational programs and the support of my friends at OCCRWA.
What is your favorite romance fantasy?

Linda Mac
