Carrie’s SUV coasted to a stop along I-78, the rest of the weekend morning traffic zooming past, hurrying on their way to Dorney Park or the Poconos farther on. The dashboard lights flashed a warning, but she already knew the problem.

“What did the mechanic say about the oil pressure?” She grabbed her phone to call for a tow truck, but first frowned at Hugh. He glanced away and shrugged.

“Maybe a leak.”

Maybe?” She shot him a glare then spoke to the Triple A contact, who assured her someone would be there within a half hour. A semi passed the vehicle at seventy, rocking the SUV in its wake.

“And did he fix it?”

Hugh did what he usually did when confronted with an example of his failure to carry through. He turned the tables back onto the confronter.

“You could have checked it yourself.”

Five years. Their nickel anniversary. A planned weekend getaway lay two hours north and west, at a lakefront Airbnb. Which now looked like a long shot, given the dashboard oil light and a thirty-minute wait for a tow. And then probably pricey repairs.

Three of those years had been a joy. The last two, not so much. Yet, altogether a major improvement over her ex, who had kept his cheating ways so hidden, she’d felt like the ultimate stooge when she finally learned the truth.

Carrie chose a smile over the irritated sigh that threatened to burst out. “I’m looking forward to our mini-vacay, hon. It doesn’t do any good to point fingers at this point.” Her phone pinged. The tow driver. “Fifteen minutes, he says.”

In truth, she wasn’t excited about the end-of-summer weekend ahead. She’d be back in front of a classroom of seventh graders in just a few days, and had suggested the trip as a way to glue the fractures threatening to cleave their relationship. She didn’t much care for sitting at the edge of a lake, but Hugh fished, and the rental included a dock and a small boat. Her hope lay in what happened between them when he wasn’t dangling his line in the water. Or staring into his laptop.

The growl of a 500-horsepower engine edged up beside the SUV, and then the flatbed truck pulled onto the shoulder in front of them.

Carrie met the driver between the vehicles to confirm the tow details. Hugh emerged from the passenger side and hung back, hands in his shorts pockets. If he spoke, she didn’t catch it over the rush of the highway traffic only a few feet away. Exhaust fumes eddied around them.

She moved to the far edge of the shoulder, and Hugh followed, as the driver readied to position the SUV on the flatbed.

“Allentown,” Carrie said, raising her voice over the traffic noise. “It’s this next exit. There’s a service station that can take a look.” The morning sun beat down on them, waves of absorbed heat flowing up from the concrete. She pulled her sleeveless tee away from her back, damp with sweat. “We’ll be on our way by noon, maybe.”

Why did she always feel the need to be upbeat around Hugh? She was like a defective tire jack, continually boosting up the car of their relationship but never quite able to get the wheel off the ground. Maybe it was time to fold up the jack and let it go.

In the cab of the tow truck, Carrie let Hugh ride next to the driver and she took the window seat. She lowered her window to escape the stifling odor of cigarette smoke.

“Where you headed?” the driver said, putting the truck into gear.

Carrie prepared to give a brief summary of their weekend plans, but Hugh answered first, a surprise.

“We’ve rented a place on a lake,” he said, a hint of eagerness in his tone. “Good fishing. Good weather, we hope. About two hours from here.”

He reached over and squeezed her hand, a second surprise.

When had he last done that?

“Yep,” the driver said. He switched on his signal to exit the highway. “Looks like a fine couple days for you. The station’ll get you squared away. Don’t you worry.”

Carrie squeezed Hugh’s hand back.

The trip looked better already.

Stagnant

I drop pebbles     slowly
watch them fall
in a shallow stream

it runs cloudy
under such a pristine sky—

they ripple
and disappear
from my eye—

but I know

they lie trapped
in murky debris
that rained down

from angry clouds

A Slight Change of Plans—A Review by Veronica Jorge

A Slight Change of Plans

Best-laid Plans Book 2

Denise M. Colby

Scrivening’s Press

2025

ISBN 978-1- 64917-470-3

Meanwhile, back at the ranch…. Well, sort of.

Last summer, in Denise M. Colby’s, When Plans Go Awry, Book One of the Best-laid Plans books, we met Olivia Carmichael in the small ranching community of Washton, California, (you see, there really is a ranch), where Olivia had fled to escape a scandal and start a new life as a school teacher. As luck would have it, love loomed on the horizon for her with Luke Taylor. To get those dreamy details, you’ll have to read the book, and the review I posted on this site July 22, 2024.

In this second book, A Slight Change of Plans, Olivia is still in Washton and welcomes Jenny Millard, her friend and fellow teacher, into the community, helping her to settle in. But for Jenny, settling in means more than just finding a job. Although she has travelled far from home, the miles and the distance have not helped to leave the rejection behind. How can she ever erase or put to rest all of the years of hurt and her wounded heart that won’t heal?

The past is not so easy to shake loose as both women discover.

Jenny makes a connection with another newcomer, Ren Lyman, a blacksmith, and a loner due to the scars of his own life. She is strongly attracted to him, but is not sure she can overcome her past and learn to trust, much less love.

A story of second-chances, hope, friendship, gratitude, and yes, the redeeming power of love, A Slight Change of Plans, satisfies at many levels. As the title suggests, things may not always work out the way we plan or expect. Colby encourages us to believe that there is a good plan for our lives, and a Master Planner who knows how to put all of the pieces together in the right place if we would only trust Him and let Him.

See you next time on September 22nd!

Flourish Even Amongst Writing Deadlines

August 12, 2025 by in category The Writing Journey by Denise Colby tagged as , ,

My 2025 word of the year is flourish. And when I started this blog post with a different topic, I realized I had not written anything about it this year on this blog. None. Zilch. Nadda. Except for one little mention in a blog post about my 2nd book’s birthday.

And then it hit me. I haven’t spent a lot of time talking about my word this year, because I’ve been so busy living it. Which is exactly where I want to be.

Denise M. Colby's word for 2025 is flourish. She designed this graphic to share her word.

I will admit, that even though flourish is my 2025 word, there are some days I feel like I’m floundering. But then I look at all I have accomplished this year, and I have flourished. (This is why we need to keep track, and count all the steps we take, including those in between every year. I share some tips in a blog post titled Find Motivation to Accomplish Goals)

Flourishing in My Writing

My writing has improved. I’ve published my second book in 2025, successfully, I might add. And my first novella releases in November (I can do a cover reveal post next month). I’m currently busy writing my next full novel as well as putting together pitches for more stories.

Not bad for someone who was ready to quit two years ago.

Yes, you heard that correctly. I was ready to walk away from all of this and then my big break happened.

Thriving in My Marketing

I’m still figuring out how to juggle marketing my current books while continuing to write, but by writing down what I’ve done so far this year, I have done several things. (Launch windows are a whole other thing as well and I’m getting better at it).

January is when many other writers set their blog and review schedules, and I’ve been able to do a yearly planner for the first time this year. I’ve learned how to utilize BookFunnel and have added both my books to a different promotion every month.

For example, this month both my books are in a Christian and Clean Romance Books group. Click on the graphic to see what it’s all about. It will also help me get my numbers up 🙂

book funnel promotions help denise m. colby flourish in her marketing

I’ve also participated in an author email swap and an author sponsored book club with eleven other authors. It’s been great getting to make new author friends and read their stories.

Health Matters, Too

As I grow older, health has been an area of focus for me and this year is no different. Figuring out which foods affect me has been one thing. Having hernia surgery in March was another. I had no idea that something I had felt for years was impacting me so much. Now I’m on a quest to get stronger, lifting weights every day and stretching to get myself in better shape. When we went camping last month, I could ride a bike longer and without pain in my leg. I call that a win, and another area I can flourish in.

Spiritual Flourishing

Definitely not last on the list is my walk with God. This one is the most important area for me, but something that can be the most challenging to make the time for. It must be a daily event for me to focus on and strive in order to flourish. Through my time with Him comes the stories he wants me to tell. But it’s more than that. It’s the compass of my life, all aspects of my life, and how I respond to the daily challenges thrown my way.

Again, I feel sometimes as if I’m floundering here, but the grace, mercy, and forgiveness I receive from the Lord, helps me in turn show others the same. That was something I stumbled on when choosing flourish this year. There is a thing such as spiritual flourishing, and even though there was not a specific Bible verse for this, this was exactly what I am striving for.

Spiritual flourishing involves regular prayer, studying the Bible, trusting in God’s promises and living out my faith in daily actions. The nature of true flourishing is a contentment in Christ regardless of circumstances.

And that we can help others flourish too. By encouraging others, share God’s love, serve those in need, and pray for one another. This is my daily prayer, that I can be an encouragement to others including my husband and my kids.

“In his days may the righteous flourish and peace abound, till the moon is no more.” Psalm 72:7

“May the LORD cause you to flourish, both you and your children”  Psalms 115:14
